Chelmno (Kulmhof) Concentration Camp Poland was not just a concentration camp. I was mainly used for extermination and killing of millions of Jewish people at once. The killings consisted of gassing the Jews, meaning that they put them in chambers and rooms and had shower heads hanging off the walls and would make them think they were getting a shower when in reality they were being gassed by the Nazi's. They would also put them into trains and cars and put hoses from the exhaust to the windows and kill them with the smoke that was very poisonous. This was the first concentration camp to start the gassing treatment in order to kill Jews. Alone in this one concentration camp 320,000 people were killed from ghettos around Chelmno. 5,000 of those people were Roman people who were sent to the ghettos and later captured by the Nazi's thought to be different and not part of Hitlers "perfect race".
Michal Podchlebnik is a 38 year old man who was a survivor from the Holocaust. The Jews who go taken were told that they could take a bag that did not exceed 10 kilograms. He states that there was a man who was a member of the "SS" and would call of there names one by one who were part of the Jewish community. The men who worked told the Jews who were being deported that they were going to work on the railroad. 1,000 Jewish people were transported from Chelmno each day. Michal Podchlebnik was not forced to leave because he was a Jew from Bugaj who had land out in the middle of the country. His name was not on the list of the residents so he got him, his mother, his sister, his brother, and their five children out of the house and into a trailer. He helped load their packs (bag allowed to bring with), he offered to go with his parents but he was not allowed to as family was not allowed to go to camps together. He described Chelnmo buildings with no gapes or wholes to look in to see what had been happening to the people inside. He was put through so much work after being separated from his entire family. He had dug wholes an shown he was strong enough that the people did not what to kill him off yet but get more work out of him. He decribed his experience as heart breaking work and misery and something he would never want to be part of again.
